Healthy Relationships and
Teen Dating Violence Prevention

A 45-minute PowerPoint workshop with video clips and role-play exercises to explore healthy relationship behaviors with peers and students in their health classes. I devise role plays addressing problem areas school counselors identify, including but not limited to inappropriate behaviors as well as awareness of teen dating violence.

“Ms. Ribeiro’s presentation on Setting the Boundaries: Avoiding the drama, was very informative to our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The presentation began with a pop quiz asking students if certain scenarios were okay or not okay in a healthy relationship. This got the students talking and discussing how they felt about each scenario. She then continued the presentation by showing healthy vs. unhealthy qualities in relationships. Students shared which of these they valued most and which would cause them to leave a relationship. Ms. Ribeiro’s presentation also included a video and ended with a pledge that all students recited. I truly believe that her presentation was important for our middle school students as it opened their eyes to certain things in a relationship that are unhealthy, but that they might not have realized before. Students in each class were engaged and participated throughout the lesson.”

IT MATTERS Dating violence, like domestic violence, can happen to anyone regardless of age, race ethnicity, religion, socio-economic class, geographic area or sexual orientation. Young adults are at greater risk for dating violence due to several factors. Because they are inexperienced at dating, young adults may assume their relationship, even if abusive, is the way dating is supposed to be. These presentations illustrate the seriousness of violence in a dating relationship, provide information and resources to get support, and offer a platform from which discussion can begin around healthy dating relationships.
